Twitter has become my favorite social networking tool for building my business. Not only am I meeting lots of friends, but I am making and strengthening connections that expand my reach of people I can do business with. Sometimes I have friends who don’t quite get Twitter. For these people, I want to explain how I use Twitter.

The standard Twitter interface is not very useful. I use a free program called TweetDeck. This program allows me to split my tweets into several columns. I use five columns.

All Friends This column shows all of the tweets from all of the friends I follow. Since I follow more than 5,000 people, it is impossible to see all of the tweets in this stream. It’s easy to ignore the tweets that say, “Make a million dollars in three weeks.” First of all, I don’t believe them, and secondly, people who blatantly sell like that don’t get Twitter. Those people are like supposed friends who invite you to dinner then sit you down for an Amway presentation. It’s just not proper.

The other type of tweet that is easy to ignore is when someone says, “I had a hotdog for lunch,” or “I am stuck in traffic.” Really, People, we don’t care.

On the other hand, I often check the All Friends column for interesting quotes or links that people have posted. If I like what they say, I will re-tweet their post, which means I share it with all of the people who follow me. I can also strike up conversations with people and start to get to know them if I see a tweet they like. When I find a new friend this way, it feels like a new friend was just plucked out of the ether. Of the thousands of tweets that fly by in the All Friends column, it’s almost just pure chance that we can make a connection. But, the beauty of Twitter is that those chance connections can be made.

Best Tweeters This column contains all of the tweets of people I know and like. I want to say that I see all of their tweets, but even with only a couple dozen people in this group, it’s hard to keep up with all of them. But, I use this column to jump into conversations with friends and see who is currently on-line.

Replies Whenever someone sends a tweet with my name, @JayKoch, in it, it appears in this column. I do read every tweet in this column because those tweets are in some way addressed to me. I try to respond to every tweet in this column.

#ENB There is a YouTube video floating around that shows a goat bleating. The subtitles indicate that he is saying, “Bob! Help!” In a few seconds, you see another goat from far away that is answering “Ed!” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S9Iq6LA7sZI Some people think this video is hysterically funny. Some don’t. Those of us who do, have formed the group #ENB (Ed Needs Bob), and we tweet each other things that we think are funny. I created this column so that I will see any tweet that contains the “#ENB” hash tag.

Everyone has their own interests. ENB is the silly thing I like to track. But, if your interest is pianos or horses, create a column that searches for your favorite keyword.

Direct Messages This final column contains tweets that are sent privately between me and one of my friends. These tweets are for communication that we don’t want everyone to see.

By splitting the big Twitter time line into these smaller columns, I can manage my communication with my friends as well as find new friends. I have even found people I want to do business with. Not coincidentally, most of these people are ones who share my ENB sense of humor.
