feed horse laminitis

for people with Purina Wellsolve L/S horse feed?

I have a 7 yr old paint(who would be put on the wellsafe low starch/sugar feed) but currently does not have any laminitis or “special needs” its just best for his hooves to have the least amount of sugar in his diet as possible, so is the feed going to make him loose weight or gain weight? he is a hard keeper as far as weight because he sheds it very fast. in the summer i normally have to put him on a weight builder(we do horse shows and he competes) anyone know the fat content on each bag? it does not say on the website(or i am just blind, haha)

also, do horses generally like the taste?

lastly, do you know the price of a bag of this stuff?

thanks so much!

This stuff is pricey. When my feed store first started carrying it, it was $35 a bag, and as the demand increased, it came down to $28. It is primarily beet pulp and alfalfa. I haven’t had any trouble with weight loss, but I have added alfalfa pellets to the feed (we have really awful hay). My horses all get the same amount they got when fed Strategy (2-3 lbs), but I have added a pound of alfalfa pellets twice a day to the Wellsolve.

If I had a really hard keeper, I would use soaked beet pulp along with the pellets.

I have noticed such a difference in the attitude of my horses since I switched. They are calmer, still have lots of energy, but not as leap-y as they used to be. Much more fun to ride when I don’t have to worry about them jumping out from under me.

they seem to love the taste; it has sort of a black licorice smell to it, and the pellet is a little smaller and finer. I have had several horses that were difficult to maintain consistent weight; shifting from good weight to too thin in 7-10 days time, and they have all stabilized on this feed. They tend to be a bit heavier, but not fatter if that makes any sense. The puffy look is gone, with smooth tissue along ribs and butt.
