How much do you feed a horse?
I am getting a chesnut quarter horse filly that is 3 years old. How much do I feed her?
Hi,
We rescue thoroughbreds and also have rescued quarterhorses. So, we have had a lot of experience tinkering with different feeds and combinations of feeds.
Your questions answer will depend on several different factors; where you are located, will you be blanketing your horse, where is she coming from, what is her weight now, etc.
We feed 4 quarts of grain twice a day with hay and they are free fed hay all day long. The feed we use is a combination of sweet feed and a complete feed. A lot, but not all, thoroughbreds have a bit of a tougher time keeping weight on than other breeds, the feed combo we use helps to keep them at an optimal weight.
The colder the climate the more calories your filly will need to consume to generate heat. If you are blanketing, this will help her to retain body heat and her caloric needs will not be as much.
Is your new horse coming from the same general area or from a different climate? What is your horse eating now at her current location? I would get some of the food that she is eating now sent along with her to make the transition to her new diet as smooth as possible.
