How to train a Stubborn Horse?
Hi im 15 I have been riding for 10 yrs plus and Have had my quarter horse paint mix gelding for 7-8 yrs. He was trained dressage and about 2 yrs ago i converted to western. Well my horse is 15 also and very stubborn. All my friends who arent as expericanced as me has push button horses that want to go when ask. The county fair is in a month and i cant get my horse to stay cantering around my arena and cant slow him down. Im getting very frustrated and im afraid I wont be ready for fair and im afraid of looking stupid out in the ring. I have never shown in my life and I just need some tips to help train him for fair. I signed up for barrels, western pleasure, trail riding and other events. I just need some tips real bad. Im so tired of asking him millions of times to do something hes been like this for yrs ever since i got him. Im tired of seein my friends get to do everything i know i can do but my horse wont. Plz someone help me thanks ~Kimberly~
he is probably set in his ways and hasn’t been made to do what he doesnt want to do, so he is just doing what he wants. I would just continue to fight with him and try to make him do what you ask. If you arnt using spurs, I would try that to see if that peeks his interest in doing what you ask or possibly using a crop. My horses are very stubborn and spoiled so I have to fight with them alot and I get tire of seeing all these other horses that do whatever the rider asks, its frustrating. As for you feeling stupid in the ring, don’t. Go in there and show your horse, if he doesnt do what you ask, dont feel bad or stupid. Everybody that goes to a horse show knows that horses have their own minds and sometimes they just dont want to listen. The first time I showed my arabian in a walk, trot, canter class we were great until we hit canter, and then he bucked the whole entire time until we went back to a trot or walk. Up until the show I could walk, trot, canter or whatever and not get anything out of him, he was a perfect angel, then show comes around and he acts up. Horse people understand. You have a hard headed horse, be more hard headed then he is and he will figure it out.
