If you have ever wondered why your horse doesn’t do what you’d like yet you see other horses do things you wish horse did, then there’s something you need to know.

Horses have a certain behavior that might need changed. To the uninitiated, it may seem puzzling you can actually change a horse’s behavior from negative to positive. Truth told, it’s easy once you know the secrets.

Here’s something that may surprise you. If you have a horse that leads good, then you can likely do more with that horse. (generally speaking) Why is this? Because if your horse is leading good, then he is paying attention to what he’s supposed to do. He’s being respectful of what you want and more willing to do what you ask.

On a scale of 1-10, (1 being worst, 10 being best) how does your horse lead? If you score anything below a 10, you should work on your horse. The reason is you’re asking for trouble if you don’t.

So here’s something you can do. Get a short whip or lunge whip and hold it with the whip’s tail in your hand. Take your horse by a rail or fence. Stand beside your horse’s throat latch. Start by stepping forward with your foot closest to your horse so he can see when you first move. If he doesn’t move, tap him on the hindquarters with the whip. You’ll likely see him be surprised and dart forward. It may also scare him a little. So be sure you don’t get run over and talk to him in a conversational manner let him know everything is ok.

Talking to him gives him more confidence. The next thing to do after leading him is asking him to whoa. When you stop, your horse should stop too. If he doesn’t, make him learn when to stop.

Next, be sure to do this on both sides of your horse. He needs to learn this from his left and right side. Practice these with your horse and you will be amazed how much better a horse you have.
