What would you teach kids (or want your kids to learn?) at a horse day camp for 3rd – 5th grade?
Just for fun:
If you were holding a horse day camp for 3rd-5th graders (geared toward those with no/little horse experience), how would you run it? How many days, how many hours a day (at camp & riding), what would you charge, and what horse/pony:rider ratio would you have?
What type of lessons would you teach to this age of kids?
If it were me, I would do:
5 hours a day for 5 day sessions, $300 per session
Maximum 5 kids per session
Around 7 or 8 safe ponies/horses
Ride for about 1 1/2 to 2 hours
Lessons on: horse safety, horse terms (colors, parts, markings, etc.), grooming, saddling/bridling, basic riding (mounting/dismounting, stop/go, turning, walk/trot, mounted games), horse health & care (mucking, feeding, common illnesses)
Plus a mini-show for the kids & parents at the end
What would your horse camp look like? 
I have done many horse camps, and they have all been planned just like yours! Mine usually started around 9am and ended at 4pm. The most kids I ever had was about 17. That was a handful, 10 kids should be the limit. Yes, all the horses should be beginner safe, and friendly. (no biting, kicking or bad attitudes) They got two lessons a day, and the first day they were on lunge lines. I also split them into groups, so they get a bit more attention. I usually had 10 kids and five horses so they shared. The mini shows are very fun too! Btw, I usually get at these 1 person to help me at the camp.
